Before you consider a new air conditioner installation you will want to consider a price range.  There are always trade offs when looking at cost.  For instance, you may be able to afford a cheaper unit but it will cost you more in the long run in energy costs.  You may be able to afford a more efficient unit because of tax credits offered by utilities and research groups.  You will want to check this out before you start shopping.

You should have some idea of what kind of features you want in a unit.  For instance do you want a UV light built in to the air conditioner, do you want to use HEPA air filters, or do you want a remote control to control the air conditioner, or a unit with built in diagnostics?

You will need to find out if the new air conditioner installation can be used with your current duct work and electrical connections.  For example a new air conditioner may require new duct work, different electrical fuses, or a new concrete pad on which to sit.  If the air conditioner is mounted on the roof or outside a window you may need to upgrade the supports to something stronger.  You may need additional wiring from the unit to the thermostat.  You may need to change the location of the drain or alter your landscaping to hide the unit.  A new air conditioner installation may allow you to replace certain equipment like humidifiers or old swamp coolers.
